Integrated Marketing

The first major step of bunk breaking the calves will be done. This, along with the other unique qualities of SMCC calves will set them apart at marketing time. We will take a major departure away from how the majority of cattle have been sold in the past in Tennessee.Calves at Feedlot 1

SMCC will partner with backgrounders and feedlots that will receive the cattle. With this partnership in place, the calves that have gone through the bunk breaking facility will never go to an auction barn. The cattle will be shipped directly by semi to their end destination. With the step of an auction barn removed from the chain, the calves will not have an opportunity to obtain any illnesses from any other animal. With this link removed, cattle can not be taken advantage of financially because of color, weight, price slide, or any other mitigating factor. All of the calves are equally represented by SMCC based on there type, weight, and producer goals.

The specific backgrounders and feedlots that will receive the calves understand the history and preparation that these cattle will have versus any others. As a result they will pay a premium above the average market price. Also, all the information that SMCC has recorded on the EID tags will be continued by the next owner of the animal, and we will reacquire the data at the carcass stage of processing. With the data gained from the EID tags, this will help SMCC and the producer make more informed management decisions.

Below will be the different marketing stages that the producer can make:

Weaning:

Selling at 450-600 lbs. They may be sold to a backgrounder, which will put the cattle on grass or winter wheat until they weigh 700-800 lbs. A feedlot may buy them if they weigh enough.

Feedlot:

Selling the animal directly to a feedlot. The animal would weigh between 600-800 lbs. There are different stages within the feedlot period of time in-which the animal can be marketed, to shift risk and take advantage of known information. Therefore, there can be financial rewards involved over and above the weaning stage of marketing.

Carcass:

Retained ownership is the ultimate stage of marketing, where the highest profitability in the cattle business is possible. The animal is owned all the way through the feedlot until it is slaughtered. This is a big step to make marketing-wise, but it can pay off in a large way.

All of these marketing options that are available to the producer will be reviewed with careful consideration. At SMCC, we will represent the producers best interest all the way through the management plan, regardless of the options chosen.
