| Cow/Calf
Management
SMCC
is willing to participate in every part of
herd management. This participation begins
from the time the bull is put in until the
time the calf is weaned; then the cycle starts
over again. Our services would include bull,
health, data, and marketing management, without
the producer having to be directly involved.
Bulls:
SMCC will house and manage all bulls when
it is not breeding season. Depending on the
management program, the producer may choose
to own a bull or SMCC can provide a bull based
on the goals of the operation. Regardless
of the age of the bull, SMCC will do a breeding
soundness exam on all bulls 60 days before
the breeding season. We will provide all health
care to the bulls and test for any diseases
before breeding season.
Vaccinations
will be:
IBR,
BVD Type I and II, PI3, BRSV, Vibrio, and
Lepto. Dewormer(pour-on). Vitamin/Mineral
complex.
Testing
for: Campylobacter (Vibrio), Lepto, and Trichomonas
If
a bull is positive they will be sold, not
treated.

Herd
health is of paramount importance, so all
cow herds will be worked with their calves
at least two times a year, once in the spring
and once in the fall.
Cows:
All
cows will receive the same vaccination schedule
regardless of the herd. They will be:
IBR,
BVD Type I and II, PI3, BRSV, Vibrio, and
Lepto. Dewormer (pour-on). Vitamin/Mineral
complex.
At
the time a cow is in the chute, her EID tag
will be scanned, her weight and temperature
taken, and pregnancy diagnosed by rectal palpation
or ultrasound. We will replace or add visual
ID tags if they are not there. Fly tags will
be put in if it is the spring and removed
in the fall. Also, the hair in their ears
and at the end of the tail will be trimmed.

Calves:
When
calves are worked, they will be at least 3
months old. Their weight will also be taken
an contribute to there weaning weight. We
will place EID tags in their ear and visual
ID tags if they are not already there. Also,
fly tags will be put in if it is the spring.
All
calves will receive the same vaccination schedule
regardless of the herd. They will be:
IBR,
BVD Type I and II, PI3, BRSV, Vibrio, and
Lepto. Clostridial (Blackleg). H. Somnus.
Pasteurella Multocida and Haemolytica. Dewormer(pour-on).
Vitamin/Mineral complex.
Bull
calves that have not been castrated will be
banded. Steers and heifers will be dehorned
if needed. Depending on the goals of the operation,
steers and some heifers will be implanted,
for weight gain p urposes.
When
calves are weaned, they will receive the same
vaccinations when they get to the bunk breaking
facility. This practice is to increase their
immunity and prevent any likelihood of disease
as groups of calves come together.
Weaning
and marketing of calves will be discussed
in there respective sections.
Note:
Vaccinations and pregnancy checking will be
performed or overseen by a veterinarian. This
is unnecessary if done by the owner(s) or
a regular employee.
